38% access Internet using mobile devices

According to a report called "Mobile Access 2010" published by the Pew Internet & American Life Project, 40% of adults now use the Internet, email or instant messaging on a mobile phone. This is up from 32% of Americans who did so in 2009.

For accessing the Internet alone, the numbers are equally impressive with 38% o Americans accessing the Internet via mobile phones in 2010; up from 25% in 2009. Click here for the full report (this will open a new browser window and download a PDF file).

Some of our clients are asking us, "Is 2010 the year of the SmartPhone?" Our answer, "No, that already happened in 2008-2009. 2010 is the year of the SuperPhone."

So what's a SuperPhone? While there are no hard and fast rules, we look for the following:
  • Larger screens - generally larger than 4 inches
  • A high-resolution camera - at least five megapixels, but preferably eight
  • High quality video capture
  • Multiple microphones for noise cancellation (both for calls and video recording)
  • Front facing camera for video calls
  • 1Ghz+ processor
  • Android Froyo or iOS4 (maybe BB, Windows, Palm and Nokia will catch up eventually)
  • Multitasking capabilities
  • Built in GPS, accelerometer, and other standard SmartPhone features
Which phones qualify? So far, we think there are 5 >> iPhone 4 (of course), Evo, Incredible, Droid X and Galaxy S although not all of them have every SuperPhone feature.

Next up, SuperDuperPhone, or UberPhone!
