Last week, Nielsen reported that smartphones now comprise of 25% of the total cellphone market in the US. That's up by 2% from the last quarter, and the number is expected to rise for the foreseeable future. As expected, the smartphone market is primarily fueled by the iPhone and Android. Also as expected, Android numbers are eye-popping; up from 6% in Q4 of 2009 to 27% in Q2 of 2010 for new sign-ups. Apple has lost some of its market share and needs to watch out for multiple brands entering the market with the Android OS. We'll see if Microsoft is able to make waves later this year.
Also of note - Neilsen predicts that smartphones will overtake non-smartphones in the US market by the end of 2011.
